Responsibilities of the Coach

  • In a Cognitive Apprenticeship, the Coach will observe and monitor the learner's performance when completing learning tasks by offering hints, feedback, and assistance to bring the learners performance to an expert status.

  • The coach will provide assistance when nurses encounter real difficulties.

  • Coaching will be a collaborative process with the learner where the coach will enhance the learner's mastery of PICC line insertion and identifying critical instances where PICC lines are required.

Training Tasks

  • Model and observe the assigned learning task in an authentic setting.

  • Assess the learner's (apprentice) current skill and knowledge level pertaining to IV insertion and motivation to learn about PICC Lines.

  • Discuss and reflect with the learner their understanding of the learning activity.

  • Consultant with the apprentice and ask probing questions to help the learner understand why tasks were done in specific ways.

    • Answer questions the apprentice may have to clarify misunderstandings about learning tasks.

  • Provide feedback to the apprentice and mentor on tasks that require their demonstration.

  • Slowly withdraw support so that the apprentice is able to complete PICC line insertions on their own.
