Responsibilities of the Coach

In a Cognitive Apprenticeship, the Coach will observe and monitor the learner's performance when completing learning tasks by offering hints, feedback, and assistance to bring the learners performance to an expert status.

The coach will provide assistance when nurses encounter real difficulties.

Coaching will be a collaborative process with the learner where the coach will enhance the learner's mastery of PICC line insertion and identifying critical instances where PICC lines are required.

Training Tasks

The instructor will observe and facilitate activities while students perform the PICC line insertion, dressing change, chest x-ray interpretation, and documentation.

The coach (instructor) will invite students to pose and solve their own problems related to PICC line complications.

Model and observe the assigned learning task in an authentic setting.

Assess the learner's (apprentice) current skill and knowledge level pertaining to IV insertion and motivation to learn about PICC Lines.

Discuss and reflect with the learner their understanding of the learning activity.

Consultant with the apprentice and ask probing questions to help the learner understand why tasks were done in specific ways.

Answer questions the apprentice may have to clarify misunderstandings about learning tasks.

Provide feedback to the apprentice and mentor on tasks that require their demonstration.

Slowly withdraw support so that the apprentice is able to complete PICC line insertions on their own.

Monitor and moderate discussion forums and blogs on assigned learning activities. ​
